Astros reliever Chris Devenski took the mound at the top of the eighth inning with a one-run lead over the Seattle Mariners. It had been a sloppy but gutsy performance by the Astros up to that point -- despite an early exit from starter Zack Greinke, the Astros had rallied back from down three early in the game to take the lead over the Mariners, and had maintained that lead thanks to strong performances by some of the younger relievers on the roster.
Unfortunately for the Astros, Devenski would leave the mound after giving up three runs in the eighth inning. The Mariners would not relinquish their lead this time, and would go on to beat the Astros 7-6.
The game started with a two-run inning from the visiting team. After Greinke recorded two quick outs, he would give up a single by Kyle Lewis, who would be driven in by a double from longtime Mariner Kyle Seager. Evan White would eventually score Seager with his own single.
The Astros managed to get a run back in the bottom of the first off of an Alex Bregman double that scored José Altuve from first.
The Mariners would plate two more runs at the top of the fourth inning, which saw reliever Joe Biagini replace Greinke after giving up a double to Tim Lopes. Greinke's final line was 3 1/3 innings with three earned runs, two walks, and two strikeouts. Biagini would give up two doubles to Mallex Smith and Shed Long Jr., with Smith's hit scoring Lopes and Long's hit scoring Smith.
The Astros would respond in a big way, however, by loading the bases in the bottom of the fourth with no outs for first baseman Yuli Gurriel. A Gurriel single, Josh Reddick walk, and Martín Maldonado single would give the Astros the lead at 5-4.
The Astros and Mariners would trade three scoreless innings before reaching the eighth. Notably, Josh Reddick led off with a triple to start the bottom portion of the sixth inning, but Martín Maldonado, George Springer, and José Altuve would all fail to drive him in.
Chris Devenski began the eighth by giving up a single to Tim Lopes. After striking out Mallex Smith, he would allow a walk to catcher Austin Nola, giving the Mariners first and second with one out. That was all Shed Long Jr. would need, as a single into right field would tie the game, which was shortly followed by a Kyle Lewis single that would plate both Nola and Long Jr., pushing the score to 7-5.
The Astros would score once in the bottom of the ninth, off a Michael Brantley double that scored Kyle Tucker, but would fail to tie the game.
